A Day In The Life Of An Islington Dental Hygienist

Our Dental Hygienist & Therapist, Naila Shaw, 30, lives in North London with her fiancé Phil – a tape and jointer and financial educator, and their two children, Moziah and Shakile. Here is a day in the life of Naila.

 My alarm goes off…

At 5.30am every single day even the weekends! I do a quick 5min stretch then jump in the shower. I wake up extra early so I can have a kid-free 1 hour to get ready in peace. I wake the kids up at 6am or 7am depending on what time my first patient is – this determines what time we need to leave and thus the times we all wake up.

I’m responsible for…

Providing prophylactic debridement of teeth, tailored oral hygiene advice and instruction, monitoring dental health in children and adults, tooth whitening, maintaining accurate records and making recommendations and giving advice on home oral hygiene equipment.

I got my job…

After finishing my diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy from King’s College London in 2016. I studied Biochemistry at the University of Bath in 2008 and worked as a Drug Analyst for 3 years before having a quarter life crisis and deciding to retrain to become a dental hygienist.

My typical day….

Involves turning the compressor, chair and computers on in my surgery. Looking through my day list and reading through the previous notes of my patient’s records for that day to prepare myself. I prepare all the equipment I will need for the whole day then I go for a wee 5mins before my first patient (often it gets so busy this is the only time I get I chance so I make sure I never forget to go)

My most memorable work moment…

Was when I treated a 5-year-old, very nervous patient. She could barely look at me at first and initially did not want to sit in the dental chair, but after 5mins she was laughing and chatting away with me and we ended up having a wonderful time.  She gave me the biggest hug I had ever received at the end of the appointment.

The worst part of my job…

Having to repeat advice I have already given over several appointments to the same people.

The best part of my job…

Seeing the difference when a patient goes home and actually listens to and implements the small changes I suggested to their brushing at home, and they come back and their gums are healthy and teeth are shiny!

After work…

I go straight home as I always have washing, ironing, cooking, clearing away, homework and bed time stories to read

If I wasn’t a dental hygienist I would be…

A property developer. I like the idea of working really hard for 4-5 months then talking the rest of the year off.

A big thank-you to Naila for sharing her full day with us! We are sure you will appreciate the level of commitment that Naila shows to her dental hygiene patients in the Highbury & Islington and Holloway Road areas.
